Garden or Museum - what’s the big deal with heirloom veg?
Heirloom vegetables and flowers (or as well call them over here in the UK – heritage) have been big for some time now. Much more so in North American than home. In fact I am always really surprised about how enthusiastic American gardeners are about ‘vegetables our grandmothers grew’. The love of heirloom veg however goes along with a certain hostility to modern varieties, and modern breeding methods such as F1 hybridisation, particularly claims that heirlooms taste better; there is also an undercurrent that heirlooms are somehow better for the world, more ethical. Here I’d like to challenge this and stand up for modern scientific plant breeding. There is also a political point I’d like to make. Read on..........

Forbidden Love
This is just one of many collections at my mother's house.
She loves to collect blue and white dishes.
She loves flow blue dishes, or any cobalt blue pattern.
She also loves Blue Willow, and that's because it was
her mother's collection.
One of my favorite memories of
being with my grandmother, was when she would
share with me the sweet forbidden love story
behind the Blue Willow pattern.
She didn't remember the Chinese names,
but she had every detail of the legend
in her memory to tell to me.
I think I must have asked her
to tell me the story
(again)
a hundred times!
In her later years, she had a quiet little shaky voice,
much like Katherine Hepburn,
and she would sit me on her lap with a plate in hand
and tell me her variation of the story below.

The Legend behind the Blue Willow Pattern
Long ago, in the days when China was ruled by emperors, a Chinese Mandarin, Tso Ling, lived in the magnificent pagoda under the branches of the apple tree on the right of the bridge, over which droops the famous willow tree, and in front of which is seen the graceful lines of the fence.
Tso Ling was the father of a beautiful girl, Kwang-se, who was the promised bride of an old but wealthy merchant. The girl, however, fell in love with Chang, her father’s clerk. The lovers eloped across the sea to the cottage on the island. The mandarin pursued and caught the lovers and was about to have them killed when the gods transformed them into a pair of turtle doves. These are seen gazing into each other’s eyes
at the top of the design.
Blue Willow, in its present form, originated in the England in 1790 by Thomas Turner at Caughley Pottery Works in Shropshire.
Do you have any blue and white dishes?

Pink Roses and Blue Birds
We are so thrilled that the Blue Birds have returned to nest in our area and lots of people have put up "nesting" bird houses to attract the Blue Birds back to Southern California.
Nesting
Let's join Bentley, my Studio Assistant, in the garden to show you where our Blue Birds are nesting this year.
Here . . . .
There . . . .
Everywhere . . . .
This is not a real nest - just one that I put out for fun in the garden.
The Blue Birds and pink roses were the inspiration for the little " nesting" painting.
I painted the bench with Blue Birds last year to celebrate their return.
"Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young - a place near your alter." Psalm 84:3
Thank you for stopping by. I love hearing from you and cherish and sincerely appreciate your visits, comments, e-mails and those who follow my blog. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to see me paint something special.
BLOG BREAK - I will be taking a mini break next week to work on a large painting for my new blog banner and will return on April 15th to show you the new work.
Have a lovely week. Blessings, Erin

Seven Things About Me:
I love being a mom, to me it's the true meaning of life.
I met my husband of almost 25 years
walking down the street in Chicago (literally)!
We live in a barn and though we can't have horses
in our neighborhood anymore,
we have a golden retriever, Hallie, a black lab, Cada,
and two gray tabby cats, Max and Simba.
This is our third house together,
the first was a Victorian decorated in Victorian style.
The second was a colonial decorated in
country French style, and the third,
well you know, is the polohouse barn.
My kids make fun of me when we entertain
and I fuss over the food and details....
they gasp and say " uh-oh.... mom is in Martharella Mode"
--- a cross between Martha and Cruella DeVille. (oooops)
If I could afford to cover my walls
floor to ceiling with oil paintings, I would.
I wish I lived near the ocean and
hope to have a beach cottage someday.

Is Martha in your craft room?
She's not in mine, unfortunately.
Wait, I just remembered.... I don't have a craft room!
(But now I think I need one.)
Martha has a new line of
craft room storage components.
Oh, my goodness!
They are available through HomeDecorators.com
(which is owned by Home Depot)
and there are several pieces
that are really good looking.
Like these.....
I think if I had a room like this,
I could be really organized too, right?

Craft storage cabinet.
Obviously, it's all about the furniture.

Hanging wall storage unit with cork and chalk boards.

Desk and stool
These items are available in three colors...
picket fence white, sharkey gray,
or rhododendron leaf green.
Choices are good.
Choices are good.
Do you have a craft room?
Maybe Martha can donate one for a blog giveaway?
I'll work on that.

Silhouettes and Cameos
that is so simply beautiful?
Could it be
the play of the
light against the dark
light against the dark
or the lack of dimension
that makes so much
of an impression?
Maybe.
of an impression?
Maybe.
But then I was
reminded how much
I love cameos too.
I love cameos too.
They have dimension.

Are you a cowgirl?
My sweet grandfather
raised horses and cows
on the farm where I grew up.
I liked the horses,
but I loved the cows ---
and they were herefords,
just like his docile herd.
